A Study on the Relationship between the Body Fat Distribution and Serum Lipid Profiles According to Apo E Isomers in Korean Women

Abstract
Apo E polymorphism(e2, e3, and 34) was among the first reported genetic polymorphism that explained part of the normal variation in plasma cholesterol concentrations. Both alleles E2 and E4 are significantly more frequent in patients with mixed
forms of
hyperlipidemia and contrribute to the observed differences in CHD risk among different populations. Among the one hundred and four healty females, aged 19 up to 26 years, eighty eight were E3/3(r.f.=0.846), seven were E4/2 (r.f.=0.067), seven
were
E3/2(r.f.=0.067), one was E4/4(r.f.=0.009), one was E4/3(r.f.=0.009), and no E2/2 was found. Lower serum triglyceride level in apo E4 allele than that in apo E3 allele was significantly shown respectively(p=0.008). Other types of cholesterol are
not
different between E4 and E3 alleles in even higher LDL cholesterol levels in the E4 allele than that in E3 allele. There are no differences in the variables anthropometric & body-compositional parameters between E3 and #4 allele except the lower
levels
of WHR and higher level of subscapular in #r allele than those in E3 allele. These resuslts are related to the correlation between WHR vs VLDL(r=0.731), BMI vs VLDL(r=-0.726), Ai vs Subscapular(r=-0.651), LPH vs Subscapular (r=-0.581), and LDL vs
TG(r=-0.545) negatively. Otherwise, there are positive correlation between WHR vs LDL(r=0.402). These results suggest that relationships between the fat distribution and concentrations of serum lipids that are usually observed are accounted by
the
E3
allele in polulation, not in E4 allele. It seems that apo E4-mediated alteration though LDL B/E receptors in cholesterol metabolism results in lower serum TG or remnant particles and in higher level of VLDL+LDL or LDL.
